Prophylaxis (Teeth Cleaning) in Medford, OR
Dental prophylaxis (better known as professional cleanings) are an essential part of your normal oral hygiene routine. At Siskiyou Smiles, we make your oral health our business. Your teeth and gums should be kept clean and happy to prevent potential issues like gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss.
The main reason we are so passionate about professional dental cleaning and oral examinations is because it gives us a chance to expose issues that may be starting to take hold of your oral health. If we are able to catch tooth decay early on, we can let you know about where it is and what you can be doing at home to fix the issue. If we can catch oral health issues while they are still small, we can often prevent them altogether.
Plaque is a commonly used term that not everyone understands. Plaque is a term used to describe the harmful bacteria within your mouth. As you eat food and drink fluids, these bacteria take what’s left over and feed on it. Through the day they tend to group up into little colonies on your teeth and gums. At the end of the day, when your teeth feel a bit fuzzy or coated with a slime, that’s colonies of plaque just hanging around.
When you brush and floss you are effectively dislodging these colonies from the surface of your teeth and gums. You will inevitably miss some of these colonies in the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth, and they will be free to try to hurt your teeth. If they are left alone for long enough they can harden into a substance known as tartar, which is equally harmful to your teeth, but very difficult to remove.
When you come in for a cleaning we have a bunch of tools specially designed to get into hard-to-reach areas and remove even the toughest of caked on tartar. We even have methods to get the stuff that builds up in places you didn’t know it could build up – like below the gum line. Plaque below the gum line can cause serious issues like periodontal disease and we are determined not to let something like that happen!
A Healthier Looking Smile
We conclude every cleaning with a nice tooth polish. Polishing your teeth accomplishes a few things besides just making them look whiter and giving them extra shine. When we polish your teeth we hit every surface of them, making sure they each get the full treatment. When we polish a tooth it removes the roughness and imperfections that can accumulate over the course of chewing and brushing.
Did you know that your enamel can be damaged by hard bristled toothbrushes or the act of brushing with too much force? It’s true. We can mitigate this issue by polishing your teeth, which also helps to eliminate footholds for plaque buildup – allowing you teeth to stay more clean, for longer periods of time.
